●この本を手にしたきっかけ
最近、仕事で英語をしゃべる人と接する機会が増えてきたので。
あちらの方が頑張って話されるカタコトの日本語をしゃべる中で、「お？」と思う表現がある。
ということは、その逆もあるはず。気になりました。
●メモしたところ
1 とくに、自分が使ってしまいそうな言葉
× Please sit down (席に着きなさい のニュアンス）
→ Please have a seat.
△ FYI(For your information)(ひと言注意しておきますけどね・・・ のニュアンス）
→ Just for your information
× You’re a liar（このうそつきやろう! のニュアンス）
→ You must be joking!
× This sweater is cheap（安物ですね のニュアンス）
→ This is a reasonable price.
△naive（世間知らずの、未熟な、だまされやすい のニュアンス）
→ sensitive
△How are you – Fine, thank you（よそよそしく温かみにかける）
→ How are you doing?/How’s everything going?/Are you keeping busy?
→ Pretty good/Really good/Not bad at all
△Thank you – You’re welcome（堅苦しい）
→ Thanks/I really appreciate this
→ No problem/You bet
× It’s okay（ぜいたくはいえないよ。しかたないよ のニュアンス）
→ Its’ made my life easy/I really like it/It’s great/It’s nice/It’s really good
× Do you have time?(ちょっと遊ばない？の意味）
→ Do you have “the” time?
× Yes, you may / No, you may not（大人が子供扱いするニュアンス）
→ Sure / No, you’d better not
× Very funny（おもしろくもクソもねーよ のニュアンス）
→ That’s really interesting / That’s really funny
× 以上を表現したい時の more than 3 (3より多くの）
→ 3 or more / more than 2
・see a movie(映画館で映画をみる) と watch a movie（家で映画をみる）の違い
・dinner = １日のうちでいちばんしっかり食べるぜたいくな食事（休日なら夜とは限らない）
× business girl (= コールガール）
→ office worker
× consent（同意・承認）
→ plug / outlet
× morning call（公式訪問）
→ wake-up call
× PET bottle
→ plastic bottle
× push phone
→ touch-tone phone/push-button phone
× baby car（ミニカー のニュアンス）
→ baby stroller / collapsible stroller
× ball pen（ball peen hammer 金槌と間違われる）
→ ball-point pen
× sharp pencil（先のとがった鉛筆）
→ mechanical pencil
・yankee = アメリカ人
△ I’m going to take this pen （盗むよ のニュアンス）
→ I’m gonig to get this pen
× Are you seeing someone?（誰かつきあっている人はいるの？ の意味）
→ Are you goning to see someone today?

→ all-you-can-east / buffet
× chou creame( shoe cream にきこえる）
→ cream puff
2. 女性的な表現
・lovely wonderful の多用は女性的な響きをもつ
→ nice / excellent
・その他もしふたつの単語でほぼ同じ意味にまるペアがあれば、長めの方が女性的、短く言い切るのが男性的( terribly – really / frightening – scary)
・感動を表す How …! や What …! は女性的
△ How nice! / How kind!
→ That’s really nice / That’s really kind of you
3.性別にかかわる表現をさけること
man woman がつく言葉は要注意。
salesman → salesperson など
